My latest project has been to recycle those old plastic/foamish placemats into art journal or portfolio covers. I smear caulking (love the white DAP Alex Plus) with an old credit card, stamp reverse images into the caulking and let it dry. Once dry, paint it with gesso. I hang it over a chair back to get the placemat to permanently bend in the middle. I then paint away---mostly using Golden Fluid Acrylics or heavy body acrylics. While it is drying, I start to compile the watercolor paper sheets, punch holes in the fold, and cut the leather string. Pulling it all together is easy---match up the holes and punch the cover; then, tie the piece together with the leather string. Embellish the ends of the leather string and you've got a rockin portfolio!!!
I'm showing these at the Green Momentum Trash to Treasure Gallery!!!

love it, what a creative idea. I really enjoy doing mixed media work and happy to have found your blog.
Oh Lisa these are such a fantastic idea and lovely. I love using caulk and am recycling some old pocket/purse size day planners someone was going to throw away. You've just given me the answer to what to put inside of them and how to go about it. Thank you!
How cool is this! Your results are lovely. I'll have to get myself some caulk and find some stuff to repurpose.
Welcome to the Soul Journal Yahoo group. We will have so much fun together!
while they are great reused into journal covers...i can also see them being awesome pieces for right back on the table as placemeats again
fabulous use of creativity
I'm a major recycler too and I love this idea! I'm going to put it in my idea book to try when I'm ready for a new journal.
Thanks for sharing!
It's such a beautiful cover you made with the recycle items.
